INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION

International cooperation of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS includes:

  • multilateral cooperation in international projects and programs;
  • bilateral international cooperation between Russia and individual countries;
  • cooperation with international organizations (CIS, EU, OECD, BRICS).

 

Multilateral cooperation
Since 2007, according to the Decree of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science, A.N. Bach Institute of Biochemistry RAS hosts the Russian National Contact Point «Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research and the bio-economy & Biotechnology» (NCP “Biotechnology”).  NCP “Biotechnology” currently operates within the framework of the new EC programme “Horizon2020” (2014-2020). NCP “Biotechnology” aims to encourage international scientific and technological cooperation between the European Union and Russia in the field of industrial biotechnology in agriculture, forestry and fishery, promoting new approaches to food production for improving quality, nutritional value, security, etc., enhancing the integration of Russian science into the European Research Area.

During the period of 2004-2016 NCP “Biotechnology” has organized seven international symposiums “The EU-Russia cooperation in the field of biotechnology, agriculture, forestry and food” in order to promote coordination between the relevant European and Russian scientific and business communities, as well as held more than 100 infodays, seminars, trainings and webinars.

In the framework of Symposium the meetings of the EU-Russia Working Group “AgroBioFood” are held. NCP “Biotechnology” provides informational and analytical support to the Working Group, takes part in the elaboration of joint EU-Russian priorities, as well as in the discussions of calls with compulsory Russian participation.

Scientific departments of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS have extensive experience of participation in international consortia and in the implementation of international projects in the field of biotechnology, health, nanotechnology. as well as in infrastructural projects. Scientific departments of the Center, together with a number of leading research institutions, are involved in the implementation of the ambitious project European X-ray free electron laser (XFEL). The Human Proteome Project (HPP) is a major international research initiative aimed at building a comprehensive database on the proteins of the human body.

The Russian Technology Platform “BioTeh2030” includes a Commission on international cooperation, which carries out expert activities, provides consulting and methodological support to relevant departments of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, and is on the regular basis involved in the activities of international scientific and technological organizations.

 

Bilateral cooperation
Scientific departments of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS have successful bilateral links with such countries as Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, China, India and many others.

The Director of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS is a member of the Russian-German Working Group on Biotechnology that operates in the framework of the Agreement on Cooperation in the field of life sciences and biotechnology. In order to enhance bilateral cooperation with Germany the German-Russian Cooperation Network Biotechnology was established. The objective of the Network is to establish a sustainable platform for technology transfer between German and Russian SMEs and research organizations.

Cluster Industrial Biotechnology in Germany CLIB2021 actively participates in the German-Russian Cooperation Network Biotechnology. In 2010 the CLIB2021 Representative Office in Russia was organized on the premises of the Bach Institute of Biochemistry.

Scientific departments of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS have stable cooperation relations with academic organizations in Germany and their associations, such as the German Research Foundation (DFG), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, Institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, German Houses of Research and Innovation (DWIH).

 

Cooperation with international organizations
The Research Center of Biotechnology RAS takes part in the work of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Academician of RAS Konstantin Scriabin is a member of the OECD Working Group for biosafety; employees of the Center are experts in the OECD Working Groups for the harmonization of regulatory oversight in biotechnology and new food products and feed safety.

Vladimir Popov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the director of the Research Center of Biotechnology RAS, is a member of the Working Group on biotechnology of the OECD Committee on S&T policy and is an official member of the Russian delegation to the OECD.

International scientific cooperation of the institutions is also supported by the currency-free academic exchanges. Employees of the Center participate in international organizations and editorial boards of international journals.
